Effect of Immunological Checkpoint Block Therapy on T cells

Immune checkpoint block therapy has many successful cases in the treatment of preclinical models and cancer patients. However, many problems still exist. Therefore, the researchers studied the effect of checkpoint blocking therapy on different T cell subsets, in which T cells are a key type of immune cells in tumors. The findings suggest that a subset of T cells that have been overlooked in the past produce a molecule that might predict this therapeutic response.
The researchers point out that so far, this area has focused on fully mature end-stage T cells carrying immunological checkpoint receptors such as PD1 or CTL4. In the early stages of activation, T cells have not expressed these receptors. However, these new cells still respond to the immunotherapy. We need to understand these early stages of T cells in order to clarify the mechanism of action of immunological checkpoint blockade. Our research helps identify an important immune cell population that responds to immune checkpoint blockade therapy in different cancers and points to a key transcription factor for the success of this immunotherapy.
With further research, we may be able to identify biomarkers that predict patient responses to this immunotherapy and identify which cells are most important in this immunotherapy.
